Watermelon man - panel 1
1997 I think I prefer this panel on it's own to the whole triptych, although it would then loose its point. It's simple and painted itself, really, while the other two got kinda bogged down and are missing something. The circles are the noise made by whatever wind instrument makes odd noises at the beginning of the tune. Their positions very vaguely represent notes and rhythms. The little birds are calling to each other with these noises. The panel tries to tell a simple story about them. follow this story in more detail later in this album. What else to say? The landscape constituents are repeated throughout the panel and the landscape assembles itself gradually left to right. by the last bubble it is complete. The birds themselves are loosly nicked from wall hangings that my granny owns (below), as well as other African art i've seen: Ripped off African art to illustrate ripped off African music. They were fun to design.
